Opera, a web browser company, has announced the launch of its free data campaign in Ethiopia. This initiative comes as part of Opera’s commitment to increasing internet accessibility across Africa and is made possible through a partnership with Safaricom, a recent entrant into the Ethiopian market.
Opera’s Africa First strategy, introduced in December 2017, places a strong emphasis on catering to the African consumer. As part of this strategy, Opera has invested over $100 million in the region to enhance internet access and provide a fast and reliable connection.
The company’s approach involves collaborating with local telecommunications companies to roll out free data campaigns. To date, Opera has enabled nearly 40 million people in five African countries to enjoy up to 3 GB of free browsing each month. This effort has had a positive impact, helping users start businesses, connect with loved ones, and pursue educational opportunities with greater affordability and ease. Notably, Opera has invested over $12 million in free data campaigns in Kenya over the past three years.
As part of the campaign, Opera users will be eligible for up to 50 MB of free daily browsing (1.5 GB a month) when using Opera Mini or Opera for Android on the Safaricom network. However, this offer excludes video streaming and file downloads and is applicable only to the latest versions of Opera Mini and Opera for Android.
